These mountains are more vast, less populated, much more secluded and much more wild. The quiet is extraordinary. You won't find the crowds of the areas closer to Denver and you won't fight for seclusion like you would in other more populace areas of the state.

Ouray: perfectly situated in the heart of the San Juans
Just minutes from Ridgway, Ouray is often called the Switzerland of America thanks to its steep canyon walls, waterfalls, and high-alpine roads. It’s perfect for adventurous couples who want a rugged mountain elopement.
Ouray is centrally located in the San Juan mountains making it the perfect basecamp to get out and explore. Silverton is only about 45 minutes south and Telluride is only about an hours drive to the west. Ouray itself has all the amenities you would need with a well stocked grocery store, world famous hot springs, roof top bars and fine dining making this a versatile location.
Couples who elope in Ouray usually choose to have an epic off-road adventure. There are numerous 4x4 Jeep tours to take you safely on an off-road exploration for high elevation scenery. Tours up California Pass, Hurricane Pass or Poughkeepsie pass will bring you deep into the San Juan Mountains for some of the most breathtaking views on the planet. Yankee Boy Basin or Governor's Basin are incredible!!

This small western town sits below the dramatic Sneffels Range, creating an incredible mountain backdrop without the crowds you find in busier destinations. The town has a relaxed atmosphere, creative energy, and plenty of wide-open views that feel untouched and natural.
Ridgway sits between Ouray and Telluride, making it an amazing central base if you want flexibility without staying directly in a busy tourist town.
Surrounding Ridgway are several state parks, and campgrounds surrounded by mountains, overlooks for dramatic views and easily accessible mountain meadows for all the beauty without a hard hike. From Ridgway it is a short drive to Silverjack Reservoir or to Deb's Meadow on Owl Creek Pass. Wetterhorn Basin and Blain Basin are longer hikes but the views in the basins are unrivaled! You also have the option to do only a short hike on these trails which will bring you to wildflower filled meadows only about a mile up the trail.

Silverton also makes an incredible basecamp for exploring the San Juans. Ouray is about 45 minutes north via the Million Dollar Highway, while Durango sits to the south. Most couples who elope in Silverton are drawn here for the endless access to high-alpine scenery. While Durango isn’t technically in the San Juan Mountains, it sits just south of them and makes an incredible basecamp for couples planning a San Juan elopement. With a larger regional airport, great restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and plenty of lodging options, Durango is perfect for couples wanting both adventure and convenience. Although it will feel much more like a larger, bustling mountains town than a tiny alpine village, Durango does have some positives for your elopement.
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Durango is easy access to the surrounding mountain towns. Silverton is only about an hour north, and the drive over the Million Dollar Highway is always so beautiful, but is will take longer to reach Ouray and Telluride than you may think. The mileage is not that long but curving mountain roads will make it a longer drive. On the way though you can explore iconic locations like Molas Pass, Lime Creek Road, and the Million Dollar Highway before returning to the comfort and amenities of Durango or continuing on to Ouray, Ridgway and Telluride.
Durango is home to the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a famous steam train that winds through breathtaking mountain scenery between Durango and Silverton. It’s an unforgettable experience and a unique way for you to add a little adventure and nostalgia to your elopement. Durango is also home to Durango Heli-tours which can provide private helicopter rides into the San Juan Mountains giving you access to scenery that is too remote or difficult to reach any other way.
